Dear Diary, this is MEDICAL VOLUNTEERS INTERNATIONAL

In the first DOVE entry "on the road", recorded on a balcony in Thessaloniki, Jakob talks to Ash, one of the field coordinators for "Medical Volunteers International". The NGO from Germany provides "people on the move" - in other words refugees - with medical assistance on site.
This conversation with Ash was very thought provoking and hopefully provides you Dovies with insights about the European asylum system. Ash and Jakob talk about the politics behind said system, why not all volunteering necessarily needs to be good and about the importance of being open-minded.

Im ersten DOVE-Eintrag "on the road", aufgenommen auf einer Dachterasse in Thessaloniki, spricht Jakob mit Theresa. Die Grazerin engagiert sich seit 2020 für die "Medical Volunteers International". Die NGO aus Deutschland versorgt "people on the move" - also Menschen, die unterwegs sind - mit medizinischen Hilfeleistungen vor Ort.
 
In diesem inspirierenden Gespräch gibt Theresa Einblicke in die tagtäglichen Herausforderungen und den Arbeitsalltag als Freiwillige in Griechenland. Außerdem unterhalten sich die beiden über "Freiwilligen-Burnout" und wie Theresa durch die Arbeit mit "people on the move" gleichzeitig radikaler, aber auch weicher geworden ist.

Rund 17.000 Kilometer. Bis zu einem Dutzend Länder. Fünf Monate. Und nur zwei opponierbare Daumen! Dieser Eintrag in das Diary Of Volunteers on Earth markiert den Beginn einer abenteuerlichen Reise: Jakob reist per Anhalter von seinem Heimatort in Österreich bis nach Südkorea. Wenn alles klappt.
Die Fragezeichen auf der Straße sind zahlreich und die unglaublichen Menschen mit noch unblaublicheren Geschichten ebenso. Geschichten von Freiwilligen auf der ganzen Welt, die Jakob durch DOVE erzählen möchte. Sei dabei und werde ein aktiver Teil dieser gemeinsamen Erfahrung und dieser unglaublichen Reise!

Roughly 17.000 kilometers. Up to a dozen countries. Five months. And just two opposable thumbs! This entry into the Diary Of Volunteers on Earth marks the beginning of an adventurous journey: Jakob is hitchhiking all the way from his home town in Austria to South Korea. If everything works out.
The question marks on the road are many and so are the amazing people with even more amazing stories. Stories of volunteers around the world that Jakob is hoping to tell through DOVE. Tune in and become an active part of this shared experience and this incredible trip!

It is early February and it's freezing cold. Thousands of people have died because of an earthquake and its aftershocks in the bordering region of Turkey and Syria. Millions will be displaced and directly affected. In this special Emergency-DOVE-Entry Jakob talks about ways to help the affected regions and volunteering networks that are on site to help. Dear Diary, this is a DEEP DOVE on MERA

Never was the name "DEEP DOVE" more fitting than this week. The entry into the Diary Of Volunteers on Earth was all about the ocean, the (Mediterranean) sea, marine biology and even a bit of snorkeling and diving.
Together with Steffi and Moni from MERA - the Mediterranean Education and Research Association -, Jakob explored what institutions in Euorpe offer volunteering experiences around marine biology, where the sea even begins or what it means to a volunteer.
This DEEP DOVE includes, but is not limited to: Jakobs story of how he got "stranded" in Indonesia during the pandemic, what it means to be part of the problem and what "Sustainable Awareness" may look like.
